Now, there are a lot of skills that you’d need if you want to be a successful software developer, but in today’s dynamic environment, learning programming for Java can be very beneficial.

Most university courses and AP Computer Science courses are taught in the programming language of Java…

…I know this from experience since I learned Java and Android with Treehouse and my AP Computer Science class was a breeze.

You can continue on to do android app development with your java skills or just build java applications alone.

This is particularly important if you want to start off your professional path as soon as possible.

Anyway, looking back to when I learned Java and Android development I made a lot of mistakes that I believed would speed up my learning process…

…but they actually slowed down my learning and impeded my growth as a coder overall.

Here are 4 tips that you can use to learn java programming fast as a complete beginner while avoiding common mistakes:

1.) Don’t Rush To Learn Programming

Even though it might sound a bit confusing – this is absolutely critical.

If you want to learn java fast, you need to take your time in understanding the overall coding logic.

Kind of contradictory, but the more you take your time, the faster you will learn the very basis of the programming language.

If you manage to handle this and actually understand how things are aligned logically, you will be able to learn java fast.

If you rush through the first few lessons, thinking that this is easy, you will have trouble later on as your foundation won’t be solid.

Also, when learning java online as a beginner, you must…

2.) Pay Attention to Mistakes

Small mistakes accumulate overtime…
If reading this you have likely never coded before or you are a beginner to programming in general.

In order to understand how to learn java online, you need to make sure that you take your time.

It is natural to overlook the “small” mistakes you make at first when learning, but they soon snowball into great deficiencies

You will make a lot of mistakes – a lot of them. This doesn’t need to discourage you or something of the kind – it needs to motivate you. Every single mistake is a lesson that you need to learn from.

This doesn’t need to discourage you – it needs to motivate you.

Every single mistake is a lesson that you need to learn from and fix properly so that you have reinforced the lesson in your mind.

Make sure that when you learn to code java (or any programming language) that you…

A Complete Java Basics Tutorial In 500 Words…

Holy crap, I can’t believe I’m writing this article.

If you are:

A student (college or high school) who is confused as f**k in his AP Computer Science class
A beginner to learning Java programming
Someone looking to learn Android app development
Someone interested in learning Java basics (never coded before)
Then this article is for you.

My name is Ben and I’ve been doing Android app development and Java programming on and off for about 2 years.

I am by no means an expert.

how to learn java programming for beginners
I hope this doesn’t apply to me…
I’m just a dumb 18 year-old kid that can code proficiently enough to try to help others with learning how to program Java.

I see so many people unnecessarily confused by Java in general and it can be helped…

…it can be difficult at first, as it was for me, but if you stick with it I guarantee reading and writing Java eventually will just be like speaking English (or whatever your native language) for you.

This overview will not be extremely in detail…it will be a simple story for you to get a better picture of java programming in a very broad sense

There is no need to learn java the hard way because if you are wondering how to learn java programming I’ll give my solution at the end of this article.

Anyway, here are the topics I will glaze over in my story.

Topics I’ll intertwine in my analogy:

Architecture (Driver class vs. Regular class)
Objects
Class —- state and behavior
Variables
Libraries
Control Flow (If, While, For, etc…)
Inheritance

Welcome the Smith’s residence.

The Smith Residence…where beautiful code is made…
Mr. Smith (let’s call him Smith from now on) is a happy man and a very cool object.

Are you thinking of becoming a coder when you grow up or as a continuation of your current career?

If you are asking, “Should I learn java?” or are looking for a way to learn java online free, then this article is for you.

This site offers a great introduction to java for those looking for the best java tutorial to teach them java programming basics.

But, onto the topic at hand, many ask: “What Are The 10 Signs I Are Going to Become a Coder When You Grow Up”

This article will attempt to answer that question and encourage those on the fence on whether they should learn java online (or any learn any coding language online)

I personally have about 2 years programming experience starting at 16 years old so I feel semi-qualified to answer this question. (you can read more about me here)

Anyway, below are the signs that you may possibly become a coder when you grow up.

1.) You are a problem solver

best way to learn java programming

If you enjoy solving problems, then it is an indicator that you will be well suited as a coder someday.

Java programming requires you to solve problems on your own, and at the same time take into consideration the budget and deadline.

This balancing act of multiple concerns and problems means that to succeed at learning programming you must be an acute problem solver.

Being a great problem solver makes things so much easier…

…many wonder “how hard is it to learn to program” but what they should really assess is not the “difficulty” of learning programming.

They should assess their own abilities to overcome problems.

Because that’s all programming is. Problem-solving.

All day, everyday.

And if you love to overcome challenges and dominate your barriers to growth then you will love the rush of learning to code.

2.) You love talking to people

Gone are the days when programmers are loners.

Coders need to explain complex problems to clients and colleagues as well as solve them

One also needs to know who to speak in simple terms, as well as the technical language, depending who you are talking to.

This fluency is essential in making the whole software development process as streamlined as possible for your team as well as the end user.

It is ok to be shy to some extent, but eventually you should learn to become a tactful communicator at least over email…

…being adept at communicating with others effectively is a great skill to have in today’s programming job-sector.

This isn’t a must because if you are great at anything you do, it’ll overcome any deficiency you have personally.

But being a great communicator is very beneficial to working with others to produce powerful, experience-driven software.

Why Team TreeHouse is so effective…

Team TreeHouse is by far the most fun and engaging online technology school for teaching java programming for beginners and advanced coders alike.

I have tried several other sites to learn Java and Android development (lynda.com, udemy.com, etc.)

No other online program is as centralized, easy to use, and as optimized around one thing: Making programming fun, exciting, and ridiculously straightforward for beginners and the pros

Beautiful Website Design & Learning Tracks Make Learning To Code Effortless…

One of the best things about Team TreeHouse is how beautiful the website is.

Period.

A subject like coding usually has a cold and boring stigma, but TreeHouse.com absolutely destroys this stereotype.

The website is so beautifully vibrant and colorful it just opens your mind to all the possibilities of what you can learn.

In addition to the user-friendly interface; TreeHouse.com provides you with premade “tracks” that make up a certain curriculum you can complete.

For example, you can take a track to “Learn Java” (for beginners) then you can take the “Beginner Android Development” track where you can apply your Java knowledge.

team treehouse review android online course track
This is what the beginning of the Android track looks like
To complete a track means you’ll need to put in a lot of hours.

Each course within the tracks has multiple videos and quizzes which you’ll need to complete in order to progress onto the next course on the track.

As a beginner myself, the tracks made it incredibly easy to navigate the then new and confusing world of programming.

And that leads me to the next point…

Learn Java Programming Basics & How To Create An Android App At Your Own Pace…

I personally tackled the Java learning track in 1 month of study and I had my first Android app up and running only 1-2 weeks after that (through the Android track).

Note: I had never written a single line of code before TreeHouse. I used to think programming was impossible for me…

…This goes to show you that you can do this.

Since the tracks save your progress you can learn anytime and anywhere.

TreeHouse even sends you daily reminders if you want of the videos you should watch for the day to be on track to finish your course by a certain date.

Get The Skills Of An Employable Developer In 3 Months Guaranteed…

…I taught myself how to make a full-scale Android app in just over a month.

team treehouse java and android app development course reviewNo other programming course online can have a promise this strong because TreeHouse is just that good.

The only stipulation is that you do the work and I’m telling you…

…if you love to learn and expand your mind Team Treehouse is like a playground where you can learn anything about coding

It really makes me happy to see such a centralize place for people to come together and learn skills that will change their lives for the better

I often see this question asked in Quora and other forums so I thought that’d I’d address it right here in a post.

But let me first start this article with a really cliche, but very relevant quote to this topic:

“There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.” – Jiddu Krishnamurti – philosopher, speaker, and writer

You can never learn all of a topic whether you are a beginner at Java programming or an expert at Android app development.

We should rather ask a more important question that will be more useful to a beginner who wants to learn how to code Java or Android (or any language for that matter):

“How long will it take to get a fundamental grasp of Java/Android Development basics so that I can have the acute ability to intelligently direct my learning to expand my expertise to the best of my abilities.”

NOW THAT IS A REAL QUESTION! (I’m such a long-winded person…maybe I just love to hear myself talk…I mean type…)

That question does have an answer and we can simply calculate it based on the amount of work you are willing to do daily.

As a disclaimer, I’m no expert at Java programming, but I have been doing Java on and off for 2-3 years and Android development for about 10-11 months (rough estimates).

In this timespan, I’ve gone from complete beginner to a proficient coder that knows where and how to solve most problems that arise.

I learned with a website called Team Treehouse which I review here, but that isn’t what this article is about…

…This should be the first goal of any beginner who wants to learn to code Java: proficiency.

Once you can navigate the development environment you use and read Java fluently a lot of doors open for you.

You can build new things, use other people’s code to expand on your own, and join the worldwide movement of the language you’re learning.

Sounds cool and all, but let me answer this article’s question directly:

How Long Does It Take To Learn To Code Java & Android?

Note: Java is the language use primarily to code Android applications and it is the default language used in Android Studio, the integrated development environment (IDE) for Android apps.

Java’s use in Android programming is kind of different that traditional Java. Think of it this: compare English 200 years ago to what it is right now.

They’re the same language, but just different words and uses of words. I’m so good at analogies…

So assuming that you are an Earthling like me, you have roughly 24 hours in each of your days.

8 are taken by sleep, 8 by work or school, 1-2 by food, and let’s just say 1-2 for miscellaneous reasons.

This leaves you 4-6 hours per day of free time (unless you have an event or work outside of work/school) weekdays and way more on the weekends.

Assuming you use all of them like I did when I began to learn, it’ll take you about 1-1.5 months to get a solid basis in Java.

This will be your computer in 1-2 months…forget sleep…
This means that you will be able to read, write, translate, drink……Java.

____________________________________________________________________

This is a common question I had when I first started to learn Java and Android app development as a complete beginner.

I started my journey to learn how to code when my and my friends had “the next big app idea that would blow the world up!”

I came into coding thinking I would become a millionaire and left with a nice side passion I keep to this day…

…In short, the world has stayed intact and I haven’t made the next Flappy Bird, BUT I now do know Java and how to make basic Android apps…

which is exactly why I’m making this site: to help guide complete beginners looking for how to learn java and android development online like I did a while back

Anyway, let’s get back to the question at hand

How Long Will It Take Me To Make My First Android App As A Beginner?

This question can be divided into two questions with two different answers:

“How long will it take me to make my first sh**ty Android app with the guidance of a teacher in an online coding course” (aka with guidance)

“How long will it take me to make my first quality Android app by myself without outside assistance?” (aka 100% solo and original app)

The FIRST question is where we want to start because this is where you learn the fundamentals of development so that you can tackle your own projects with discipline and structure.

So basically when I began learning to code I went through several stages.

I first tried to learn online with miscellaneous YouTube videos…that didn’t work.

I then tried to learn Java from a textbook from my AP Computer Science teacher…that didn’t work.

I finally tried to learn online with a book I got from Barnes and Nobles…annnnnnd that didn’t work.

Finally, fully defeated I went online and Googled some structured online courses for learning Java and I found Treehouse.

I review the Team Treehouse Android and Java courses here in a thorough article, but that’s not what I want to discuss here…

…After I joined TreeHouse I had Java basics under my belt in 1-1 1/2 months.

I next tackled Android development and I made my first app under instruction within’ 3-4 weeks of learning the android development environment.

So that’s a total of about 1-2 months to get my first Android app up starting at ZERO coding knowledge.

I had never written a line of code…ever.

My first app simply changed a quote on the screen based on a button press, but that project really taught me how to use the Development Environment Android Studio.

Question 1 down, Question 2 is up next…

…After completing my first app with Team Treehouse I did some more projects with them and made about 4 more stock app projects with my own tweaks.
