Google Maps has a new home screen, Designed for INDIA

Google rolled out a new home screen on Google Maps for Android,
specifically designed for people in India.

Newly added shortcuts on the home screen that help you explore the app in just a few quick taps.

In the new Google Maps app, you’ll instantly see a directions card with different modes of transportation.

Thinking of taking the bus to Connaught Place
Planning to go by foot to a new mall,
you can start planning your route with a single tap.

You can also save the route to be used offline.

Below the directions card, you’ll also see icons highlighting some of the other useful features on Maps from getting a first impression of a place with satellite imagery, to real-time information about traffic around you, to more details about public transport lines when you’re on the road.

The new features will help millions of Indians coming online for the first time.

How satellite image helped detect forest fire in Congo

36000 hectare of forest has burnt in the Republic of Congo from November 2015 to April 2016. Images from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 have been combined to reveal that. A very strong El Niño is the reason behind frequent forest fires in the area. During the peak, fire was spreading at a rate of 1600 hectares a day. The maps show that the origin of the fires correlates with accessibility to the forest, suggesting they were caused by human activity. These forests are not only an important habitat for large mammals such as gorillas and forest elephants, but they also store large quantities of carbon. Data from the Sentinels are available because of the European Union’s Copernicus free and open data policy. With a temporal resolution of 10 days and a spatial resolution of 10 m, Sentinel-2A images allow the timing and extent of fire events to be mapped precisely. The success of the Sentinel-1 and -2 satellites will soon be supported by Sentinel-3. The Sentinels are a fleet of dedicated EU-owned satellites, designed to deliver the wealth of data and imagery that are central to Europe’s Copernicus environmental programme.

New Google Maps feature help you find out your car parked location

New Google Maps feature will help you find your parked car.

Though it already has the automatic parking location detection,
it doesn’t really work always.

So when you park your car next time, open Google Maps and tap the blue dot, that is your location.

Then tap the “Save your parking” option to save your spot on the map.

You can also add notes, and edit the car location.

You can even share the location with your family or friends, so they can also go straight to the car-parked location.
