IELTS Live – Task 2 Writing – Practice for Band 9

IELTS Writing Task 2
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Many people no longer feel that it is important to officially get married while others still consider marriage to be an essential part of life. Which side do you agree with and why?
Several individuals believe that marriage is not necessary. However, others feel that tying the knot is key to life. What do you believe and why?
Give explanations and examples from your own experience to support your argument.

What is marriage? – a ceremony, a union between two people for life, it is a legal documentation of the agreement between two people to spend and share their lives together.
Why do people get married?
For legal reasons…
A legal agreement to support each other and be faithful to each other
A proclamation of wanting to start a family
Adopting a child
Immigrating to another country (citizenship)
A feeling of safety and support
For income and tax purposes.
They want to demonstrate their love and commitment not only to each other but the rest of the world also.
How does this work?
Governments have special taxation and legal rules for married couples to support them to live a prosperous live, such as a tax break of 20% on joint income
If a spouse commits adultery, they can be jailed or fined.
Inheritance in case of death.
In case of divorce, wealth is distributed.
Using this information create a thesis statement – an argument with two clear points about why marriage is important?
Although some people believe it is unnecessary to tie the knot, I do believe that the sanctimony of official marriage is very important because of legal and social advantages.
(Hook) The practice of marriage has been around for thousands of years in many corners of the world. (Background) (definition) When two people wed, they join their lives together both emotionally and financially in the eyes of religion, law and each other. IELTS SPEAKING SAMPLE CUE CARD “Describe a long journey you went on “

This Speaking test performance was overall above band 7.0 but lacked some of the positive features of band 8.0
In terms of fluency & coherence, the student spoke fluently at length without noticeable efforts or loss of coherence. She was rarely hesitant and that too for searchable language. She was able to coherently present her ideas and was appropriate in all her responses.
In lexical resources, She was flexible in discussing a variety of topics but mostly used common vocabulary with very less use of connectors and transition words.
In Grammatical range and accuracy, she used a variety of structures flexibly with the majority of sentences being error free.
There were only a few non-systematic errors but overall she was able to deliver her response well.
Her voice modulation & pronunciation features did sound like a regular user of English and there were rare pronunciation errors.
