Multiple Choice Quiz App with SQLite Integration Part 7 – COUNTDOWN TIMER – Android Studio Tutorial

In part 7 of the SQLite quiz tutorial, we finally implement the countdown. For this we will use the CountDownTimer class, pass it a running time in milliseconds and an intervall how often it’s onTick method will be called and then we update our TextView with each tick. We will convert our milliseconds to minutes and seconds and then format this time into a string using the String.format method. We will also change the text color of our countdown text if it runs below 10 seconds with the setTextColor method and when the timer runs up, it’s onFinish method will be called where we check for the answer. We also override onDestroy to cancel our CountDownTimer there when our activity finishes.

The purpose of the GridLayout is to allow child views to be positioned in a grid arrangement. The GridLayout essentially consists of a number of invisible horizontal and vertical grid lines that serve to divide the layout view into a series of rows and columns, with each intersecting row and column forming a cell which can, in turn, contain one or more views. The grid lines are referred to as indices, which are numbered starting at 0 for the line at the leading edge of the layout.
