Getting Started with Kotlin

We have never added a new programming language to Android… until now! With Android Studio 3.0 we are officially supporting Kotlin for creating Android apps. Learn how to start a new project with the Kotlin language enabled or how to convert your existing classes using the Convert Java file to Kotlin refactoring.

For more information about the language syntax and idioms, refer to our blog post: https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2017/05/android-announces-support-for-kotlin.html

Beginner Android REST Tutorial – Implementing Retrofit REST Adapter, OKHttp, JSON, DataModel

In this tutorial series, I’ll be explaining the fundamentals of RESTful Web Services, and what the hell that actually means. In particular, I’ll be demonstrating how to build a basic REST API to pull Repository Data from GitHub’s REST Endpoint. We’ll use Retrofit, OKHttp, and a bit of RxJava magic to make it all work nicely.

In this video, we look at the information necessary to communicate with our REST Server, which happens to be GitHub. Using GitHub v3 API (although you may need to use a different version, if you’re here from the future). We’ll then create a POJO/DataModel to represent data retrieved from GH. With that, we can actually build the Rest Adapter, which is actually pretty simple (imo).

Github API v3:

How to Add RecyclerView with Kotlin in Android

How to Add RecyclerView with Kotlin in Android

Subscribe To My Channel and Get More Great Tutorials
http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=sandeepbhandari1

This tutorial describes how to use android kotlin extensions library through the following steps:

1) We create a new project in an android studio with new project wizard and enable support of kotlin in our project.
2) The android kotlin extensions library is already added to the project when creating new project.
3) We use android kotlin extensions library with activity and fragments, then we deploy and run the app to the android emulator.
4) We use android kotlin extensions library with Custom Views and view Holder, then we deploy and run the app to the android emulator.
5) Finally we use android kotlin extensions library with Parcelable to pass objects with intents, the we deploy and run the app to the android emulator.

Notes:
– Android kotlin extensions library are a kotlin plugins that we can enable in kotlin android studio project and use its features to eliminate boilerplate code (findViewById calls). It helps us to access the views directly and access their methods as they are properties of them. It can aslo considered as alternative to ButterKnife Library which is Basic Usage of DataBinding Library.
– ButterKnife: it’s a library developed and maintained by jake warton (Square Inc.), has annotations that help developers to instantiate the views from our activity or fragment. It also has annotations to handle events like onClick(), onLongClick(), etc.

CalendarView in Android App | Android Studio 3.0.1 | Kotlin | 2018

In this tutorial, we learn about CalendarView.

CalendarView
This class is a calendar widget for displaying and selecting dates. The range of dates supported by this calendar is configurable.

The exact appearance and interaction model of this widget may vary between OS versions and themes (e.g. Holo versus Material), but in general a user can select a date by tapping on it and can scroll or fling the calendar to the desired date.

What can Kotlin do for me? (GDD Europe ’17)

By now, you’ve probably heard of Kotlin and may have even taken a look at some of its features. And you might be wondering what the big deal is. Sure, it’s got some nicer syntax—and what else? The thing about Kotlin though is that it’s not about a list of features, but how, together and in harmony, these features lead to a more enjoyable and productive development experience. In this video, Hadi Hariri focuses on showing why Kotlin solves some of the pain points you often encounter when writing code—be it Android, Server, or any other type of software development.

Xamarin (Visual Studio) vs Android Studio and Kotlin

You probably already know the basic differences between developing in Xamarin Android and native development in Android Studio.

Xamarin is cross-platform and even when you choose to use Xamarin Android instead of Xamarin Forms you can still share the main chunk of your code which is not dealing with OS specific stuff, with iOS application.

What if you want to develop only for Android though? Should you choose Xamarin and Visual Studio or Android Studio. And is it better to develop in Java or in Kotlin?

Will Kotlin replace Java? | Is Java Dead?

Kotlin is a language with better features than Java and Kotlin is also on JVM platform.
If you are a beginner to android development I would recommend you to learn Kotlin because in future Kotlin would be more in demand than Java, but Kotlin wont replace Java because many projects are already made in Java.
So replacement wont be possible.
