How to create an android camera using intents – Part 1

For those of you new to android or programming I recommend the new Kotlin Camera Intent series https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9jCwTXYWjDJwCVaF0l2ZwsLSqchEmsxl which now supersedes this series.
But for those of you experienced in Java by all means do this series.

Please note that I don’t respond to questions on the youtube channel but for those that require help I provide paid consultancy services here https://www.codementor.io/mobapptuts

This android camera intent tutorial is part 1 of a six part series. It covers creating an android project from scratch using android studio.

There will be no coding in this tutorial, it will be introducing you to the structure of an android project.

The application created in part one of the video tutorial is the default hello world application.

In this tutorial we will cover:
Relative layouts.
Introduce the AndroidManifest file.
Talk about Packages, Applications, Activities and IntentFilters.
Discuss the source code of the activity.
Run the application on device.
Introduce the debug app.
Walk through the code with the debugger.

This tutorial series is intended for beginners to android who have had some programming experience ideally with an object orientated language such as java or C++ for you will be exposed to writing android java code syntax.

This tutorial series does not use the android camera api’s but calls one of the android camera applications via intents to capture it’s image.

Android studio (1.2.1.1) is the editor of choice (IDE) for this tutorial series.

This tutorial will expose viewers to the android concepts of:
Android studio project.
Android manifest, layout and source files.
Android layout & views.
Activities.
Intents, actions and categories.

This tutorial series is the first of what I expect to be many so I encourage comments and feedback to improve the quality and viewing experience.

SUMMARY
– When you have an important level to pass or battle to win, and suddenly, completely out of the blue and at the most inopportune moment, there it is – an ad. Just turn on the Airplane Mode on your phone and the problem is solved!
– Every time you connect to a new Wi-Fi, your phone shows you dots instead of the actual password letters on your screen. But what if you need to quickly connect the other device to the certain source of Wi-Fi and you don’t remember the password? There is the app called Wifi Password Show.
– You can create your own texts for any occasion possible! Just go to Settings, choose Phone, then Respond with Text and voila – here you can make your own personal message that will be sent to your contacts.
– Turn on a Guest Mode! To switch it on, simply tap the User icon in the top right corner of the quick Settings panel. Then tap Guest.
– If you enter *#31# you will hide the number for all calls. If you need it just for one certain call, you can type #31# right before the number you’re calling.
– Audio Timer will allow your device to turn off all the audio at a certain time. This is available only to iOS users, though, and takes only a couple of quick and easy steps.
– Another one of the coolest features that your iPhone has – taking photos while filming a video. This option is available for all the iPhone models from iPhone 5 and onward.
– Tap the Share icon in any app, choose Android beam from the list of options, and then just put the devices together back-to-back. A couple more seconds and your mission has successfully been obtained.
– If it is necessary, Android users can easily use keyboard or mice. This can be very useful if your display is damaged or if you just need to type a lot of text. All you need to do to attach a keyboard or mouse to your Android phone is a USB on-the-go cable.
– ! The app is called Screen Lock – Time Password and it will make your phone’s current time (or any other option related to time) its lock screen password. Just look at the clock and unlock your phone with the current numbers.

Android Developer Live Coding #13: Unit Testing with Mockk, Coroutines, Test Driven Development

Format – 2 Live shows per week:
1. Live Q&A (Sunday 10:00AM UTC -7):
Live Q&A is directed towards beginner and intermediate Android/Java/Kotlin Developers with questions regarding said topics. As a self-taught developer, I never wanted anyone to do my work for me, but I could have benefited greatly by someone explain fundamentals and pointing me to resources. General/Principles based questions are easier for me to answer, but sometimes I can help you with API specific questions.

2. Let’s Build an App Live (Monday 10:00AM UTC-7):
This show is still under beta, but my goal is to demonstrate what it is actually like to build good quality software, to an architecture. I’ll still try to address comments in the chat, and take breaks to answer short questions, but this is not meant to be a Q&A primarily.

Jim Coplien and Bob Martin Debate TDD

http://www.infoq.com/interviews/coplien-martin-tdd

Bob Martin is also known as Uncle Bob. He is an Agile Manifesto author, and author of books on Agile Programming, XP, UML, Object Oriented Programming, and C++.

Jim Coplien is a software pioneer in Object Oriented programming and C++ and multi-paradigm design. He is also co-author of DCI paradigm.

Debate sprang up at JAOO ’07 around Bob Martin’s assertion that “nowadays it is irresponsible for a developer to ship a line of code he has not executed in a unit test.” In this InfoQ video, he debated with Jim Coplien on this and other topics, including Design by Contract vs. TDD and how much up-front architecture is needed to keep a system consistent with the business domain model.

Android Developer Live Coding – Android, Kotlin, Software Architecture, Gradle

“Uncle” Bob Martin – “The Future of Programming”

How did our industry start, what paths did it take to get to where we are, and where is it going. What big problems did programmers encounter in the past? How were they solved? And how do those solutions impact our future? What mistakes have we made as a profession; and how are we going to correct them. In this talk, Uncle Bob describes the history of software, from it’s beginnings in 1948 up through the current day; and then beyond. By looking at our past trajectory, we try to plot out where our profession is headed, and what challenges we’ll face along the way.

Robert C. Martin (Uncle Bob) has been a programmer since 1970. He is the Master Craftsman at 8th Light inc, an acclaimed speaker at conferences worldwide, and the author of many books including: The Clean Coder, Clean Code, Agile Software Development: Principles, Patterns, and Practices, and UML for Java Programmers.

Reflections on Willpower (Motivation), Goals, and Hard Work

A friend of mine asked if I could talk about willpower, which I define as the ability to put forth effort towards a particular goal, regardless of of how difficult it may be to do so.

If you’re expecting me to be concise, you’ll want to skip this one.

Topics discussed:
– Being an Obsessive Person (the good and bad sides of that)
– Having an overarching goal in life
– Destroying self doubt and useless mental states through reflecting on death (lol, that sounds darker than it probably is)
– Determining intermediate steps (daily practice) necessary to achieve a goal
– The downside of always trying to aggressively reach goals
– The most profound analogy I’ve ever heard, regarding when to work hard, and when to let go of all the habits and beliefs which support you in achieving a particular goal.

Much of this discussion is based on my understanding of Stoic and Buddhist philosophy, which has supported me immensely in my development as a human being.

How to Kotlin – from the Lead Kotlin Language Designer (Google I/O ’18)

Kotlin is similar to the Java programming language, so it’s natural that your Kotlin code looks very much like Java code when you are first start to use the language. While this is fine to begin with, you’re probably not taking full advantage of all the language benefits. In this session, the lead Kotlin language designer will show you how you can write more idiomatic Kotlin, what the benefits are, and help you discover some of the most powerful yet lesser known features of Kotlin.
